The Earthquake in Iran – and in hours the phones of the intelligence analysts, nuclear scientists, and the world leaders were ringing. It appeared to be another tremor in an active seismic area. But the time, the place, the depth and the wave action of this so-called earthquake is telling an entirely different story. When the world was glued to the news of missile attacks, drone interception and the mayhem of fighting between Israel and Iran, something might have occurred on one of the depths of the Iranian land that will alter everything – and the news of what is spreading quietly through the intelligence circles is the word nuclear.
The Science Doesn’t Lie
Natural earthquakes and nuclear explosions do not differ on the surface but to a seismograph, they are entirely different animals. A natural quake is a series of long, irregular, rolling waves which are as a result of moving tectonic plates. An underground nuclear explosion creates yet another thing a sharp and sudden and perfectly symmetrical shockwave, which explodes out of only one point. The pattern was observed with the earthquake that took place in Iran. The readings were flagged by monitoring stations in the region nearly all at once. It was too shallow, too clean, too near to any of the known underground military installations to be considered accidental. That is exactly the way North Korea has been carrying out its nuclear tests over the years, secreted as a natural seismic, not seen by the satellites, not seen by the world.
The Perfect Cover of War
Iran could not have made a more opportune choice. Thousands of airstrikes by Israel and the United States, the media of the world covering the fighting in the frontline, all the radars and all the satellites that followed the missiles in the air made the underground area to be mostly left unmonitored. Yes, the Natanz nuclear plant in Iran was seriously damaged in the first salvos of this war but, as western intelligence has been telling us over the years, that is not all of the story. Iran is also thought to have various deep rooted, massively fortified nuclear installations which no bomb has ever hit exhaustively. A nuclear programme, twenty years of preparation of which has been aimed at just this type of attack, is not defeated by the destruction of one visible facility. As the war was going on air, Iran might have been taking the most significant step underground.
The World Will Never Be the Same
Provided this earthquake is declared to be a nuclear test, the principles of this war change in a second, and the principles of the whole world order. Israel and the US would no longer be engaged in a conventional war. All the negotiations, all the ceasefire talks, all the military equations, would have to be re-written. The development of the nuclear armed Iran would be the largest of all the alterations of power in the Middle East in the present history and the impact of same would spill well outside the region, into the world oil markets, the world security alliances and the future of the nuclear non-proliferation treaties of the world. The earthquake took a few seconds. The aftershock, in case the worst should be established, may be a generation.
